Education
Peekskill City School District offers a wide range of educational opportunities in a diverse, interactive environment. The goals of our seven-member Board of Education focus on achievement, a safe environment, and strong fiscal management. Peekskill uses the Princeton Plan in which children are assigned to elementary schools based on grade: children in pre-kindergarten attend Uriah Hill School; kindergarten and first grade attend the Woodside School; grades two and three attend the Oakside School; and, grades four and five attend the Hillcrest School. Special initiatives for grades K-5 includes an English-Spanish Dual-Language program and an Enrichment Program which offers all students the opportunity for academic enrichment. The District has strong arts and music programs with community involvement.
Peekskill Middle School (grades 6-8) is located in a new state-of-the-art building. Each grade has its own dedicated space, or “house,” within the building. The Middle School is technologically advanced and has a professional performance auditorium, double gymnasium, and competition-sized swimming pool. Peekskill High School (grades 9-12) offers many enhanced programs. Ninth and tenth graders learn in small learning teams. PHS’ Freshman Academy ensures all incoming freshmen are offered the educational foundation to prepare students for their high school, college and career ventures. Numerous AP and college-level courses are offered. An innovative internship program is offered to seniors. A modern planetarium is part of a strong science curriculum, including a program of independent mentored research. Peekskill High School Summit Academy provides an alternative learning program focused on individualized attention, differentiation and social/emotional learning.
